During the forty-plus years of its production, the 2CV brake system evolved greatly as new technologies came along, and as expectations in terms of performance and safety grew stronger. The 2CV saloon models were initially equipped with drum brakes both at the front (200 mm diameter) and at the rear. From 1981 onwards, practically every model of 2CV acquired disc brakes at the front, with the notable exception of the 2CV Spéciale. Every model of 2CV van was had drum brakes at both front and back, although of a larger diameter (220 mm). Only the AK400 van had the honor of being fitted with disc brakes. The brake circuits and the positioning of certain sub-assemblies of which they were composed have undergone even greater evolution over time. For instance, originally, the master cylinder was positioned directly on the chassis, but was subsequently relocated to a position at the front of the body from September 1963 onwards. During the period from 1949 to1967, the brake circuit was mostly composed of rubber hoses augmented with rigid pipes and a round brake pedal just like the clutch pedal. The hoses and pipes of which it is composed are equipped with 10 by 10 banjo clips (diameter and pitch in millimeters) and copper seals. After 1967, the brake pedal became rectangular and the brake circuit was upgraded to pipes of 4.5 mm diameter. As from 1973 and until the end of production of the 2CV in Portugal, rigid brake pipes of 3.5 mm were used. The 3.5 mm circuits (with 8 mm unions) or 4 mm circuits (with 9 mm unions) were equipped with so-called “red” seals for 2CV models with front drum brakes, and so-called “green” seals for those having a disc brake at the front..

The brake circuits use fluid of LHM type or Lockheed type, depending on the model of vehicle. Lockheed brake fluid was used on all vehicles with drum brakes at the front, while LHM brake fluid was used only on vehicles with front disc brakes.
